Young gun axed as Rabbitohs face crossroads

South Sydney have hit the panic button after two rounds, sacking much-hyped halfback Lachlan Ilias. Wide World of Sports spies at Souths training at Heffron Park on Monday morning have reported that Dean Hawkins - the Rabbitohs' reserve grade halfback - was in the middle of the field running the team - while Ilias was among the reserves. The halfback switch is expected to be made official when Souths name their team on Tuesday afternoon. Ilias, aged 23, was handed the reins at the Bunnies when Souths made the controversial call to allow veteran halfback Adam Reynolds to join Brisbane in 2022. He showed initial promise but his game has plateaued and in the two losses so far this season - to Manly and the Broncos - he has failed to have any major impact. The Rabbitohs have lost 11 of their last 15 games stretching back to midway through last season and coach Jason Demetriou clearly decided drastic action needed to be taken. Hawkins faces a massive game first-up - the local derby against the dangerous Sydney Roosters on Friday night. A local junior, the 25-year-old debuted in 2021 but has always been ranked behind Ilias - until now - playing just six top grade games in his three seasons at the club.
