Former Panthers half Niwhai Puru put up his hand for an NRL hit-out at some stage of 2023 with an impressive debut for the Sharks.Puru laid on a couple of tries and had plenty of zip about his play as the Sharks outclassed the Knights.Another new boy, fullback Daniel Atkinson, also shone in his first game for Cronulla after only signing a couple of weeks ago from the Queensland Cup.Atkinson score a solo try, regathering his own kick and set up another in the dying stages. There were plenty of other positives for the Sharks - winger Tom Rodwell - son of Illawarra legend Brett - scored the opening try after just four minutes and prop Thomas Hazelton also looked good and was rewarded with a try.The Knights were led around the park by experienced halves Jackson Hastings and Tyson Gamble but failed to make much of an impression, with the Sharks in command at 16-4 at the break.Knights fullback Bailey Hodgson produced a mixed bag with several unforced errors but some dangerous runs.Second-rower Ben Talty made a couple of handy breaks for the Knights when thrown into the fray late in the game and Adam Clune showed some touches of class, but there was little else to enthuse about the Knights.
