Stefano Utoikamanu lifts the lid on real reason for taking less money to leave Tigers for Storm

Stefano Utoikamanu has revealed his decision to leave Sydney and move to Melbourne was to force himself outside of his comfort zone and improve as a NRL player. Utoikamanu was offered a reported $4 million to remain at his former club with the Wests Tigers desperate to keep the 24-year-old in Sydney to help the rebuild. However, Utoikamanu turned the competition on its head and linked up with Craig Bellamy and the Melbourne Storm on a deal reportedly worth less than what he would have made at the Tigers. Naturally, Tigers fans were frustrated with Utoikamanu joining the 2024 finalists with the prop arguably being the piece to the puzzle for the Storm as they look to go one step further in 2025. And ahead of the Storm's season opener against the Eels next week, Utoikamanu has revealed why he knocked back big -money deals for the Storm. Knocking back big offers from the Bulldogs and Wests Tigers was due to his desire to improve as a player and he felt Melbourne was the place to achieve this. Utoikamanu's partner and two sons have only just moved to Melbourne ahead of the NRL season. "Staying in Sydney is probably going to be the most comfortable for me because I have pretty much all my family there," he said. "I looked at coming here as being probably the most uncomfortable because I don't really have anyone and I think that's going to put me under pressure and make me work a bit harder. When you get comfortable with being uncomfortable, that's when you strive in footy so I knew coming here I'm going to become a better player. I knew if I wanted to get the most out of myself, I probably needed to take a bit of a pay cut."

With the Panthers losing a host of strike power from their grand final winning team over the summer, the bookies have installed Melbourne as title favourites this campaign. And with maestro Craig Bellamy pulling the strings for possibly the final time and managing to keep most of his roster intact, the omens are good for the Storm. Melbourne got rid of some dead wood, have some great kids coming through their system and have added Tigers colossus Stefano Utoikamanu to their forward rotation. The line-up at the Storm is so strong that there may well not be a spot for budding superstar Sua Fa'alogo in the 17-man line-up for round one. Bellamy boasts the best spine in the NRL with pocket rocket Ryan Papenhuyzen at fullback, dynamic duo Cam Munster and Jahrome Hughes in the halves and the game's top hooker, Harry Grant, wearing the No.9 jumper. He has built a team around the four stars and everyone plays their part to perfection. The wing pairing of Will Warbrick and Xavier Coates score tries for fun, while in the centres Nick Meaney is highly underrated and Jack Howarth was one of the big improvers in the league in 2024. The forwards are basically honest toilers with the exception of Eli Katoa, who with a sprinkling of Bellamy's magic dust, became one of the most dangerous wide runners in the league last season and should only get better. Grant is a freak out of dummy-half and rival coaches know what he is going to do each week - but seem powerless to stop him, such is his class.

Heavy Tigers blow as Utoikamanu exit confirmed

The Wests Tigers have confirmed Stefano Utoikamanu will leave the club at the end of the season. Utoikamanu became a free agent for 2025 when a bizarre contract clause was triggered when he failed to earn selection in the Blues Origin side. The 24-year-old has reportedly had offers from the Bulldogs and Melbourne. "Wests Tigers wish Stefano and his family the very best with their future endeavours," the club said in a two-line statement on Monday morning.

Gould's 'mail' revealed in twist over Stefano pursuit

League icon Phil Gould has revealed Nelson Asofa-Solomona could be on the way out from Melbourne as the club ramps up its pursuit of Tigers star Stefano Utoikamanu. Utoikamanu is a free agent after clauses around finals and Origin appearances meant he could negotiate with rivals. Melbourne is one club interested in the prop, with 9News and Sydney Morning Herald reporter Michael Chammas revealing on Nine's 100% Footy that Craig Bellamy had met with Utoikamanu on Sunday morning. "The Storm are really intent on making him their next signing, they just need to convince him that Melbourne is the place to go ... I think it ticks all the boxes from a football point of view, it's just whether or not he wants to make the move to Melbourne," Chammas said. Gould said the Storm would be a good fit for the prop before hinting that Asofa-Solomona could be on the move, without naming any potential landing spots. "Everyone that goes to Melbourne improves, don't they?" the Canterbury Bulldogs general manager said. "My mail is that (Nelson) Asofa-Solomona won't be there so I suppose they're looking for a replacement. "... His (Utoikamanu) next move's important. He's 24 years of age, he's not a boy anymore. "He's about to come into the prime of his career and he'll need to put himself with a strong side and coaching and it doesn't get any better than the Melbourne Storm."

Giant prop Stefano Utoikamanu has strongly denied claims that the hapless Wests Tigers have already given up on their season.The Tigers have been the major flops of 2023, winless after five rounds and alone at the bottom of the NRL ladder.The Tigers are in tatters on and off the field, with media and fans having a field day at their expense.But a passionate Utoikamanu believes the Tigers have the ability to bounce back - and soon."It's frustrating losing every week and copping it everywhere we go," 22-year-old Utoikamanu told Wide World of Sports."It gets to you but we are trying."We've played poorly but haven't lost most games by much - that's one good thing."Our goal every week is to put it all behind us and get a win up the following weekend."The media always seems to have a go at us but morale is okay, everyone is fine and we are sticking by each other."One win will make a difference. We will surprise a lot of people. We have a good team."Utoikamanu, one of the Tigers' better players this year, also went in to bat for embattled halfback Luke Brooks."For some reason everyone wants to blame Luke when we lose," he said."But it's a team thing and we all make mistakes."What we have to do is brush off the mistakes and get over it and do better."
