For 20-year-old utility back Joash Papalii, the wait for an NRL debut proved long and frustrating. Seven times in the opening 11 rounds, he was in the Eels' initial squad, only to be cut the day before game time. But against Manly on Friday night, the football gods smiled on the promising youngster. Papalii was named on the bench for the first time and, had things gone to plan, would probably have got 20 minutes late in the game… until fate stepped in. In the opening minute at CommBank, centre Will Penisini was knocked senseless - and Papalii suddenly found himself thrust into the action. And the youngster shone against the Sea Eagles' star-studded backline, producing a try assist and try in the space of two minutes. The former Bulldog lower grader shows he has what it takes - and can expect plenty more NRL time in the months ahead.
