South Sydney are in danger of losing Dean Hawkins - the man who has been handed the responsibility of saving their season - for 2025. The talented halfback - brought into the team this week to replace the struggling Lachlan Ilias - is a player in demand with his manager inundated with calls from rival clubs. With few class halfbacks on the open market, Hawkins can name his own price if he turns around the Rabbitohs' 0-2 start to the year. The 25-year-old Hawkins debuted in 2021 but has played just six top grade games in his three seasons at the club. With Ilias starting 2024 ahead of him in the pecking order at Souths, clubs have been targeting the talented local junior. "Dean is Souths through and through but there are other NRL clubs who have shown a real interest in him - as well as Super League teams," Hawkins' manager Tyran Smith told. "He was the NSW Cup player of the year last year and captained the Rabbitohs team that won national championship. "Clubs have been watching him for some time - they know he is only on a one year deal and they want him. "We have already spoken to a couple of clubs but will wait and see how he goes the next few weeks before taking the next step. "It's been frustrating for him the last couple of years not getting many chances at NRL level so we have to do what is best for his career."
