Andrew Johns has hinted the Knights were in discussions with Bevan French last year, fresh off the Super League star's performance in the World Club Challenge. The former Eels speedster was enormous in Wigan's upset victory over the Panthers last weekend, playing in the five-eighth role and displaying his wide array of talents. French predominantly played fullback or wing during his time in the NRL, but has since developed his ball-playing skills and is one of the UK competition's elite stars. Speaking on the latest episode of Wide World Of Sports' Freddy and The Eighth, the rugby league Immortal backed French for a potential return to Australia down the line. "I think Newcastle were chasing him last year," Johns said. "He's one of those players that you can't coach against because you don't know what he is going to do. He would be a sensation if he came back. "I hope he comes back … he's a special player." French played just 47 matches in the blue and gold during a tricky NRL tenure, despite emerging as one of the game's brightest young talents when he burst onto the scene. The 28-year-old remains without a deal for next season at Wigan and has left the door ajar for an NRL comeback, despite no firm offers reportedly being on the table. During Wednesday's edition of Wide World Of Sports' Six Tackles With Gus, Phil Gould heaped praise on the electric Tingha product after dominating overseas.
