Dragons make bombshell captaincy call

Jack de Belin has been named Dragons captain for the club's round 13 clash with the Dolphins, with regular skipper Ben Hunt on State of Origin duties. The news comes after de Belin's strong performance in St George-Illawarra's last gasp victory over the Roosters reportedly put him in calculations for NSW for the State of Origin opener. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that NSW medical staff asked for an update on de Belin after he starred for the Dragons against the Roosters. They were told he was fit and would be available if selected. De Belin is part of the Dragons leadership group and is the club's most experienced player in Hunt's absence. It's understood the Dragons also considered teammates Blake Lawrie and Jaydn Su'A for the captaincy role but both will be missing for Thursday's game. Lawrie is expected to miss up to a month with a broken hand while Su'A has a hamstring problem.
