Broncos warned over pursuit of $1.25m star

League icon Andrew Johns has urged the Brisbane Broncos to find a long-term successor to Adam Reynolds before throwing cash at David Fifita. Fifita left the Broncos in 2020 for a lucrative deal with the Titans, which sees him earning about $1.25 million this season. He's unlikely to earn that much in his next deal, and has been linked with a return to Red Hill, with the Raiders also interested in the 23-year-old, who is in the final year of his contract. While the acquisition of the backrower was initially hailed as a massive coup for the Titans, Fifita has had an inconsistent two seasons on the Gold Coast - the other club in line for his services for 2024 and beyond. The impending departures of both Herbie Farnworth and Thomas Flegler have left the Broncos suddenly cashed up, and reports have strongly linked them to a pursuit of Fifita. But Johns says other holes need to be plugged in Kevin Walters' roster before a Fifita homecoming can be entertained. "The first one for the Broncos - obviously Adam Reynolds is coming to the end - if they didn't have the best 18-year-old halfback in the system, I'd go and buy the best halfback," he told.
