Brisbane Broncos fullback Tesi Niu is now in danger of missing the start of the season, after injuring his hamstring at training this morning. Niu was facing a race against the clock for round one. Club officials weren't able to put an exact timeframe on the injury, but it is believed to be roughly four to five weeks in length. They have named David Mead as their fullback for this week's trial match against the Titans. Brisbane will play this weekend and another trial, against North Queensland, next week, before opening their season on March 11 against the South Sydney Rabbitohs. It gives them more question marks in the spine of their team, after coach Kevin Walters said earlier tonight that he wasn't sure who would be playing five-eighth alongside new recruit Adam Reynolds. Albert Kelly has been named as the halfback with Billy Walters at five-eighth for this weekend's trial match against the Gold Coast Titans. Reynolds has been rested. "They've both got an opportunity for this weekend... it's a three or four-way jostle for that No.6 jumper," Walters said Niu, 20, played a few games at either wing or centre in 2021 before settling at his preferred position in the latter part of the season. He scored eight tries in 16 games as Brisbane stuttered to 14th on the ladder.
