'Mistaken as a weapon': Key detail Raiders duo dispute

Warring Canberra stars Hudson Young and Morgan Smithies won't be sent home despite the NRL's worst nightmare - a late night stoush in Las Vegas. The pair scuffled in the lift of the team's plush hotel after a boozy night out on Thursday. The incident occured after a malfunction in the hotel's computer system that saw irate players having to wait hours in the check-in queue. One of the players was left without a room in the confusion, requested to share his mate's bed, and the pair scuffled with a plastic baseball bat in the hallway or elevator, waking several guests. "We came back after a night out on Thursday and there was an issue with the room," Young said as the pair fronted the media early Tuesday morning AEDT. "We're not going into details of that. There was a scuffle in the elevator, nothing in the hallways. "We came back as a team and one of the boys had got a toy baseball bat somewhere. That was mistaken as a weapon in the elevator but it played no role." The pair were adamant that they eventually sorted the issue out, and hotel security was not involved. "Security didn't break anything up," Young said. "We went downstairs to sort our room out and that's when they've reviewed the footage and asked us to leave. "The club sorted it out and we're very thankful to be staying here at Resorts World." Raiders officials are fuming that their players embarrassed the club but will not send the pair home only days before the big season opener against the Warriors. But both are expected to face hefty fines and sanctions. Young insists the pair are good mates and it was simply an incident that escalated from jet lag and frustration over the room mix-up. "We're so close as a team and me and Morgan are really good mates. Everyone knows that," he said. Englishman Smithies was also insistent there was no bad blood over the incident. "Ricky was disappointed and we were in ourselves," Smithies said. "We apologised and are looking to move on and focus on this week. "It's a massive week so we want to put it to bed."
