'Tough situation' facing gun Titans youngster

Gold Coast are in danger of losing one of their best young backs for next season. Jaylan De Groot made his NRL debut for the club last year and produced a man of the match display against the Knights, scoring a try and making several fine bursts. But the 22-year-old has his heart set on playing fullback - and the Titans have three top-class fullbacks in Keano Kini, AJ Brimson and Jayden Campbell on their books. "It's a tough situation for the kid because he has played fullback all his life and has been in great form there in the Queensland Cup," De Groot's manager Tas Bartlett told Wide World of Sports. "He got one crack last year and made the most of it against Newcastle so he knows he can handle the NRL. But realistically he won't get many chances at fullback at the Titans and they want him to play centre. "We will see his things pan out in the first half of the year before making any decision on his future - but if he went on to the open market, a heap of clubs would be chasing Jaylan, I am certain of that." Kini won the club's Player of the Year award in 2024 and made his international debut for New Zealand, while the likes of Brimson and Campbell spent time in the halves.
