'Easy decision': Sharks star joins teammates with new deal

Cronulla's quest to win a premiership is at the top of Teig Wilton's mind in 2025 as the star second-rower locks in his future with the club. The 25-year-old joins the long list of Cronulla stars who have inked contract extensions in recent weeks, putting pen to paper on a fresh two-year deal. Already under contract for next year, Wilton will now remain in the Shire until the end of the 2027 season, joining back-row partner Briton Nikora with a new contract. Wilton has made 85 appearances for the Sharks since making his debut in 2020. "I knew if the club wanted to have me I was definitely going to stay. Cronulla's home to me; it has been since I started my football journey here. I can't see myself any place else. "I love the club, I love the area and I love the whole crew we've got here." While the decision to recommit was a natural progression for the forward, the Narooma Devils junior admitted his eyes are set on bringing home the Provan-Summons Trophy. "I've got a premiership on my mind," he said. "That's the main thing on my mind for this club with our group. I'd be lying if I said that wasn't at the forefront of my mind." Wilton was a powerful figure in the Sharks 2024 campaign, helping the team reach the preliminary finals where they were defeated by eventual premiers the Panthers. Developing through the club's junior system, Wilton averaged 33 tackles and 104 run metres each game, and crossed the line to score on five occasions. But the best of Wilton's talent is yet to come, according to Sharks general manager of football Darren Mooney. "Teig is an integral part of our future," Mooney said.
