Roosters swat away rivals to tie up young gun forward

The Roosters have seen off interest from at least two rival Sydney clubs to secure the services of promising young forward Terrell May for an additional two years. Dragons coach Shane Flanagan spoke publicly about his desire to lure May and his two brothers, Tyrone and Taylan, if they were open to testing the open market. Gun centre Taylan, 22, signed a lucrative two-year extension with the Panthers last week and now his older brother Terrell, 24, looks to have followed him by staying loyal to the Roosters. A deal is yet to be formalised by the club but The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the Roosters and May have come to an agreement over a $500,000-a-year extension that will keep him in Bondi until the end of the 2026 season. According to the report, the deal includes an upgrade in his pay packet for this season as May continues to establish himself as a regular in the first grade side, alongside Kiwi Test veteran Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Origin gun Lindsay Collins. While Flanagan publicly stated his admiration for the May brothers, including former Panthers utility Tyrone, 27, who currently plies his trade in the UK Super League with Hull KR, the Bulldogs were the other Sydney club reportedly monitoring front-rower Terrell's contract status. The new deal at the Roosters is expected to be announced in the coming days, adding to the good news trumpeted by the club on Wednesday when it signed USA Sevens star Liz Tafuna to its NRLW squad for the 2024 season. "Liz stood out to me with her speed, footwork, ball skills and toughness and I believe that she has the physical attributes to play our game at the highest level," Roosters NRLW coach John Strange said of the signing coup. "Most importantly, Liz has demonstrated a huge desire to test herself in the NRLW and I have no doubt that with hard work, she can have a great impact on this year's NRLW competition, and I expect her to contribute, along with our whole squad, to what we are building here at the Roosters."
