'Huge upgrade' looms for teen Wighton replacement

It's taken just five weeks for unknown youngster Ethan Strange to prove himself the successor to Jack Wighton at Canberra. And the youngster, currently on a paltry contract, is set for a huge upgrade and extension in the coming days. It's a massive turnaround for Strange, just 19, who had a nightmare debut in the NRL last season. He was on the wrong end of a 48-2 thrashing by the Storm and could do nothing right - and was promptly dropped and didn't play top-grade football again in 2023. Strange could have disappeared after that, joining the long list of one-game wonders - but chose a different path. He applied himself like never before over the off-season, put on bulk and speed, beat several contenders for the number six jumper… and hasn't looked back. Wighton's departure could have been a major headache for the Green Machine. but the NSW under-19 star has filled the gap perfectly and is about to reap the reward. "We are set to talk about a new deal in the next few days," Strange's manager Gavin Orr told Wide World of Sports. "Ricky has been really impressed by him and Ethan loves the club so things are falling into place nicely."
