A month out from the start of the 2024 NRL season, the Cowboys' wonderful 2022 seems a distant memory. They were the talk of the game in '22, and roared into the finals despite many pundits tipping them for the wooden spoon. With a bunch of rising young players headed by some seasoned veterans, it looked like the only way was up in 2023.But in a major shock, they crashed and burned and missed the finals altogether. Maybe it was the dreaded second year syndrome hitting the rookies who took the game by storm the previous year, but Todd Payten needs to find the solution over the summer. And fast. Rediscovering their confidence and mojo is vital, and after last year's disaster no club needs a good start to the their 2024 campaign more. Last year the team lost eight of its first 13 games. Then, heads dropped and they were chasing their tails in the second half of the season. Wins in three of their first four games would quickly put the Cowboys back in finals contention.
