Rival clubs, player managers and the NRL have done the Dolphins no favours in the build-up to their debut season in the NRL. While there is much excitement around the game's newest franchise and the return of master coach Wayne Bennett for one last hurrah, the cold hard fact is the Dolphins' recruitment has fallen short of the mark. Managers used the Dolphins as a bargaining chip to raise the price of players at their existing clubs and despite much hard work behind the scenes, Bennett was unable to come up with that much-needed marquee signing. As a result, the Dolphins have a solid but unspectacular squad and are hot favourites to take out the wooden spoon in their maiden campaign.
