Apisai Koroisau has been appointed Wests Tigers captain despite sparking controversy when he laughed at the embattled club's prospects of winning an NRL premiership. The prized recruit is the captaincy replacement for James Tamou, who departed for the Cowboys following the 2022 season. Koroisau, a three-time premiership-winner, made a mockery of the Tigers' title aspirations while speaking on stage during the Panthers' premiership celebrations in October. "This place has been incredible the last three years I've been here. It's turned into a family for me," Koroisau said. "There's so much young talent. "To go out on a high like that ... it's pretty incredible, and I'll probably do the same thing at the Tigers," he added, before bursting into hysterics. Koroisau is the first captain in Tim Sheens' second stint as Tigers head coach, in which the veteran mentor is teaching Benji Marshall the craft before handing over the reins ahead of the 2025 season.
