Burgess released after ill-fated move to Dragons

George Burgess has been cut by the Dragons, with the premiership-winning former Souths superstar likely facing the end of his NRL career. Burgess joined the Dragons at the start of the year and played just four games with the side. By the end of the 2022 season he was coming off the bench for their NSW Cup feeder side. "The Dragons thank George for his contribution to St George Illawarra and wish him all the best in his future endeavours," the club said in a statement. In the same statement the Dragons confirmed they had signed another former Souths player, Zane Musgrove, who was released by the Tigers to make the deal happen. "Zane is an established NRL player with a strong physical presence and will be a great addition to our forward pack," Dragons football general manager Ben Haran said. "We've been looking to build our forward pack and we're excited to see Zane join the Dragons." The 26-year-old Samoan international played all 24 games of the Tigers' campaign, scoring two tries. In their own statement, Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe said releasing Musgrove was the right decision for the club. "He's very well-liked and respected here at Wests Tigers by his teammates," he said. "This move is an opportunity that works for us as a club and for Zane. "We wish Zane all the best with his future and thank him for giving his best effort over the past three years."
