Last week Kevin Walters had a clear wake-up call for Anthony Milford. “I was out at Souths and watched it. You know, if I was to be honest, no he wasn’t up to the standard that we believe he can play at,” he told reporters. “But that’s one game of four or five, how many it takes for him to get back to the football we know he can play.” Well, while Walters may want to see more before considering a recall, he got the response he was after as Milford played a crucial role in the Magpies’ resounding 60-10 win over the Cutters this weekend. Milford took the line on nine times and ran for 117 metres, busting 12 tackles in the process. The five-eighth scored the second try of the night when he shaped to spread the ball left before backing his instincts and stepping back inside to cross the line in the wet. He was at it again later in the first half with a try assist, sending Isaiah Tass down the sideline to run away and score. Only three minutes later Milford pounced once more, using his running game to split through the middle and set up Creedence Toia. Milford finished with two try assists and three linebreak assists.
